At Au Natural Skinfood, we’re vocal and proud about the fact that our products are completely GMO free, but we often find that information about GMO is sorely lacking. Here’s a quick rundown on all things GMO: What it is, what it means for you and the planet, and why we’re going without it.

Back to basics

To go right back to basics, GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. This is a term that can be applied to any naturally occurring organism whose DNA has been scientifically altered.

While the rise in genetic modification (genetic engineering), has allowed for some huge scientific breakthroughs, concerns have been raised about the fact that this process is readily used to make plant crops resistant to pesticides, linking it to health issues including infertility, allergies, and immune problems. With the growth GMO being used we increasingly see these altered organisms present in the foods we eat, and even the products we use on our skin.

GMO and beauty products

For instance, common beauty ingredients such as soybean oil, corn oil, and corn flour can all be produced from crops that were genetically modified to be highly tolerant to toxic chemicals, which may well have flow-on effects, for our own bodies. It’s worth being aware that many products and brands that position themselves as being ‘natural’ may still be formulating their products with genetically modified plant material, as there is currently very little regulation surrounding the practice.

Au Natural Skinfood have opted to say a big NO to GMO, choosing instead to use ingredients we know to have had a completely natural life cycle, from the ground to the bathroom counter. As far as we’re concerned, it’s safer for you, better for the environment, and a natural way to approach the movement towards “Clean Beauty”.
