Manuka honey can be applied topically to the surface of the skin or be taken orally either in its natural form or as a supplement, maximising its range of benefits to the body.
The efficacy of manuka honey’s powerful anti-bacterial properties was reaffirmed in recent years by tests conducted by Sydney University’s School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences. In the course of their study, manuka honey was able to kill every strain of bacteria it was tested against, including antibiotic-resistant “superbugs”, some of which are flesh-eating. Importantly, the research also found that the bacteria were unable to develop a resistance to the honey in the way they can with general antibiotics.
Furthermore, New Zealand’s University of Waikato has formed the Waikato Honey Research Unit, on this select team is the same scientist who first uncovered manuka’s unique anti-bacteria properties. The key aim of the research unit is to better study the cellular composition of honey and examine its antimicrobial activity in the hope of unlocking more of its potential benefits. In 2004, Britain's National Health Service (NHS) licensed the use of medical grade manuka honey – which must adhere to strict regulations and meet high standards in order to qualify- as a wound dressing. Its ability to remain highly effective in the presence of fluid and bacteria makes it a natural choice as a treatment method. What’s more, in the same year, the NHS also authorised the use of the honey in sterilised, medical-grade skin creams.
Since this time, there have been many reports of manuka honey being used with positive results as a dressing for different kinds of open wounds, including burns and skin ulcers. It has been proven that the anti-bacterial properties within the honey can both fight the infection and help the skin cells repair and rejuvenate, allowing the tissue to heal effectively.
Additionally, the presence of the manuka honey helps keep the wound moist, which promotes healing and speeds up the process.
The healing properties of manuka honey have been known locally for a very long time, with records of indigenous New Zealanders using the substance as a natural health aid stemming back hundreds of years. History demonstrates that Maori people used the honey itself, as well as the leaves and bark of the plant it derives from, the tea tree, to fight colds, treat urinary infections, and ease joint and muscle pains. The native New Zealand Manuka bush (Leptospermum Scoparium “tea tree”) contains a special property that distinguishes it from all other honeys (methylglyoxyl). Manuka honey has additional antibacterial properties which work after the hydrogen peroxide disappears (known as non-peroxide activity). This makes Manuka honey much more potent than other honeys.
Health Benefits for oral and topical applications of Manuka Honey
Manuka honey has an anti-bacterial component that sets it apart from other honeys. While all honeys have limited anti-bacterial properties, in the case of manuka, the activity is stable and doesn't lose its potency when exposed to dilution, heat or light. Trials have also indicated that manuka honey can heal wounds and skin ulcers that haven't responded to standard treatments, an encouraging development in the world of medicine.
Manuka honey has been found to be effective against a range of bacteria, including those that cause most stomach ulcers, infected wounds, and sore throats. In addition, it has proven potency against several dangerous bacterial diseases, including flesh-eating strains and the staph infection MRSA.
Manuka honey is both antimicrobial and antiviral. It is also an antioxidant, meaning that while it can ward off infections, it can also help to increase vitality and immunity, particularly to the skin.

Also included in Au Natural Skinfood’s formulas are NZ pure Bee Venom, a fine powder made from a mixture of proteins, circulation-boosting peptides and natural amino acids which help plump skin by boosting collagen, while antioxidants contained within it help stabilise the collagen structure, improving the texture of the skin and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Au Natural Skinfood conducted Independent Skin Cell Research, with the assistance of a NZ Ministry of Science and Innovation grant, resulting in scientifically proving the powerful 80% skin cell regeneration properties only found in NZ Medical Grade Manuka Honey and Pure Bee Venom. With its amazing anti-aging, moisturising, healing, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, it is suitable for all skin types including dry, congested, irritated, sensitive and compromised skins as well as oily and acne-prone skin. The main principle being if we eliminate bad bacteria and stimulate good bacteria on the skin, we believe that we can strengthen the skins natural barrier function, allowing our skin to use its own defense system as nature intended, to repair compromised areas and to fight environmental damage.
